What is academic tie-up with international universities

Academic tie-ups with foreign universities are partnerships between Indian universities and those of other countries to provide study programmes that will enable staff and students to obtain a global perspective on their chosen fields of study. The lessons give students the chance to improve their chances of landing a job.

The academic tie-up process may culminate in a dual or combined degree. A candidate in a dual degree programme studies a subject for which both an Indian and a foreign university award a degree.  The curriculum is developed by the two partner universities, and up to 30% of the course can be completed in other countries.

TheHindu : According to UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar, the process for an Indian higher education institution to offer programmes in collaboration with foreign universities has been made simpler by allowing eligible institutions to directly enter into Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with one another.

How Does an Academic Tie-Up Work?

In 2022, the University Grants Commission approved academic collaborations between Indian and overseas educational institutions. Three different degree options will be available through the tie-up.

  • Dual Degree: In a dual degree programme, a candidate studies a topic and receives a degree from both an Indian and a foreign university.
  • Joint Degree: The curriculum is established by both collaborating universities, and a portion of the course is carried out overseas, with a maximum of 30% finished overseas.
  • Twinning Programme: The programme is provided at an Indian university and a foreign university. Foreign universities will receive no more than 30% of the credit.

Indian Universities with Foreign Tie Up

Over 40 international universities have expressed an interest in forming Memorandums of Understanding with Indian universities. A memorandum of understanding was recently signed between the University of California and IIT-Kanpur for collaborative academic and research activities. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is constantly contacting foreign universities, and many of them have already cooperated with Indian institutions. Source

Benefits of International Tie-ups

The collaboration between Indian and foreign universities benefits not only the students but also the partner institutions. International academic collaborations give students access to a wider world. They can interact and share ideas with academics and students from other countries. Cross-cultural interaction improves both colleges. Institutions from abroad become acquainted with Indian cultures, environments, and business.  These colleges offer advantages to their students, including placement opportunities with foreign companies.
