In the early 2000s, the Azim Premji Foundation embarked on a mission to enhance elementary education within government schools across India. The Foundation aimed to make a profound and lasting impact on the quality of education throughout the country through close collaboration with the government.
Over time, the Foundation established district-level institutes dedicated to enhancing the capabilities of teachers, school leaders, teacher educators, and administrators in the public education system.
A decade of grassroots engagement yielded valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities at the grassroots level. It became evident that a pressing need existed for well-qualified professionals in the social sector.
In response to this need, Azim Premji University was founded in 2010. Initially, the university introduced two programs in education and development, alongside courses tailored for working professionals to enhance the skills and capacity of those already engaged in the field.
