CEPT University's primary focus lies in comprehending, designing, orchestrating, erecting, and overseeing human habitats. Their educational endeavors are geared towards cultivating conscientious professionals, while their research initiatives delve deeper into the understanding of human settlements. Furthermore, CEPT University actively engages in consultative projects to advance the objective of enhancing the livability of habitats. Through their multifaceted approach encompassing education, research, and advisory roles, CEPT endeavors to elevate the influence of habitat professions in enhancing the quality of life for individuals residing in India's villages, towns, and cities.

The university comprises five distinct faculties, each with its unique area of specialization. The Faculty of Architecture, established as the 'School of Architecture' in 1962, places a strong emphasis on private realm design. In contrast, the Faculty of Planning, founded in 1972 as the 'School of Planning,' directs its focus towards planning within the public domain. The Faculty of Technology, established in 1982 as the 'School of Building Science and Technology,' is dedicated to engineering and construction-related disciplines. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Design, established in 1991 as the 'School of Interior Design,' specializes in habitat-related interiors, craftsmanship, systems, and products. Finally, the Faculty of Management, inaugurated in 2013, centers its attention on Habitat and Project Management.

CEPT University derives its name from the 'Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology.' CEPT, along with its constituent schools, was established through the collaborative efforts of the Ahmedabad Education Society, with the backing of the Government of Gujarat and the Government of India. In 2005, the Government of Gujarat formally incorporated CEPT as a university. Subsequently, in 2007, the University Grants Commission acknowledged CEPT University's status under section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. Furthermore, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) of the Government of India recognizes the University as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO).
