IU was founded as a philanthropic endeavor by its Founding Chancellor, Dr. Rajiv I Modi, in loving memory of his parents, Shri Indravadan Ambalal Modi and Smt. Shilaben Modi, who laid the foundation stone of Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (CPL) in 1951. In homage to their legacy of care and compassion, both the university's governing body and Dr. Rajiv Modi are resolutely committed to the comprehensive transformation and advancement of the University, aspiring to make it a symbol of global academic excellence.
Shri Indravadan A. Modi, the Founder Chairman of CPL, was a remarkable visionary, renowned for his humility and generosity. He earned the moniker "Medicine Man of India" and was a true patriot who pioneered the domestic production of medicines. Smt. Shilaben Modi, the first employee of Cadila, provided unwavering support to him and stood as the bedrock of Shri I.A. Modi's determination to make essential medicines accessible to the most vulnerable segments of our society.
