The conception of JUIT was the result of a shared vision between the Government of Himachal Pradesh and Shri JaiPrakash Gaur, the Founder Chairman of the Jaypee Group, in the year 2000. The state government provided leased land for this purpose, and the university came into being through Act No. 14 of 2002, as proclaimed in the Extraordinary Gazette Notification of the Government of Himachal Pradesh on May 23, 2002. Subsequently, the University Grants Commission granted its approval under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, as conveyed in their Letter No. F 9-10/2002(CPP-1) dated December 9, 2002. Additionally, JUIT holds membership in the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Academic activities at JUIT commenced in July 2002, with the university currently offering undergraduate B. Tech degree programs in the following fields: Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electronics & Computer Engineering, and Information Technology.

In addition to B. Tech programs, the university presently offers M. Tech programs in Biotechnology, with specializations in Industrial Biotechnology and Medical Biotechnology, Civil Engineering with specializations in Structural Engineering, Construction Management, and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering with a specialization in Information Security and Data Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering with a specialization in the Internet of Things. Furthermore, JUIT provides M.Sc. programs in Biotechnology and Microbiology.
