Presidency University occupies a distinct and noteworthy position in history as one of the earliest institutions of Western-style higher education in Asia. In 1817, a coalition of enlightened Indians and Englishmen founded Hindoo College. This institution came under the purview of the British Government in 1855, evolving into the College of the Bengal Presidency, and subsequently, in 1857, becoming a part of the newly established Calcutta University.
Over the ensuing century and beyond, Presidency College emerged as the premier hub of higher education in Bengal. While it operated as a Constituent College of Calcutta University, it nurtured a research tradition that few Indian universities could rival. This rich heritage added a distinctive dimension to its undergraduate teaching.
The formal establishment of Presidency University in July 2010 marked a pivotal moment. It provided an opportunity for the institution to reimagine its time-honored traditions and enduring strengths, positioning itself as a leading educational establishment of the future.
