Sikkim Manipal University (SMU), previously known as Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical, and Technological Sciences, was established on November 15, 1992. This institution came into being through a collaborative agreement between the Government of Sikkim and the Manipal Pai Foundation. Its primary objective was to provide outstanding education and healthcare services within the state of Sikkim and across the nation. Notably, this partnership marked a pioneering Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in India for higher education and healthcare services.

SMU operates through two distinct campuses: the Medical campus and the Technology campus. The Government of Sikkim extends an annual grant of Rs. 2.25 Crores to support the hospital, enabling the Central Referral Hospital (CRH) to offer free treatment to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and concessional treatment to other residents of the state.

Incorporated in 1995 under the Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences Act (Act No. 9 of 1995), SMU holds recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, as evidenced by letter No. F. 9-7/96(CPP-I) dated December 9, 1998. Additionally, the Government of India has provided its approval. The university's courses have received approval and accreditation from various regulatory bodies, including the Medical Council of India (MCI), Nursing Council of India, Indian Association of Physiotherapy, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Distance Education Council.
