Sri Sai University was established with a primary goal of providing value-based professional and technical education. It obtained the status of a State Private University through Act No. 3 of 2011, passed by the State Legislature of Himachal Pradesh. The university's recognition was further affirmed by the U.G.C. under Section 22 of the UGC Act 1956, allowing it to confer degrees, as stated in letter F.No.8-2/2011(CPP-1/PU) dated June 1, 2011.

The decision to establish Sri Sai University in Palampur was based on an evaluation of the academic progress and remarkable achievements of the Sri Sai Group of Institutes. This endeavor was founded by Sh. Ram Iqbal Bhardwaj Ji and has thrived under the dynamic leadership of Hon'ble Chairman Er. S. K. Punj and the respected Managing Director Smt. Tripta Punj. In 2010, the Government of Himachal Pradesh granted legislative approval for the establishment of Sri Sai University in Palampur.
